Immediate Empathetic Care
Taking the Steps Necessary to Efficiently Restore Young Smiles
Accidents can occur at any time through a myriad of circumstances. Whether it is a tooth knocked out in a sports game, a painful jaw after tripping and landing face-first on the sidewalk, or sudden onset tooth pain that won’t go away, the team at Pediatric Dentistry of Round Rock recognizes that dental emergencies occur at what seems to be the most inopportune times. Because of this, our office offers same-day appointments for your child’s dental emergencies.
Preparing for Your Emergency Visit
When an emergency occurs, the most important thing to remember is to act calmly but efficiently. Depending on the situation and severity of the dental emergency, your child may be in shock or pain. Keep in mind, however, that if you remain calm, your child is more likely to remain calm as well. If your child is suffering from a serious medical emergency, contact 911. Otherwise, contact our office if your child is experiencing:
- A problem that will require immediate dental attention to preserve an oral structure
- A dislodged or broken tooth
- Severe swelling or discomfort
- Something lodged between teeth that flossing cannot remove
- Trauma to the tooth or jaw
The next important step is to locate any pieces of a damaged tooth. If you locate pieces of teeth, make sure to secure them in a Ziplock bag or sealed container and bring that with you to the appointment. If the entire tooth has been knocked out, locate the tooth if possible, and carefully rinse it under warm tap water, taking care to preserve any tissue that may be attached. Next, place the tooth in a sealed container with salt water or milk, and bring it with you to the appointment. You may bring a pillow, blanket, or stuffed animal for added comfort for your child.
