Prioritizing Your Children’s Well-Being
Why Our Office Checks for Oral Cancer
For most parents, oral cancer is not at the forefront of their mind when it comes to their children’s oral health. It is true that it rarely occurs in children, but there is still a chance that it can, and catching it early could make an enormous difference. At Pediatric Dentistry of Round Rock, our team prioritizes your child’s health and takes it seriously, which is why we checks for oral cancer during your child’s routine check-up and examination.
Spotting the Warning Signs
Possible warning signs of oral cancer can include:
- Red or white patches in the throat
- Difficulty swallowing, moving the tongue, or chewing
- Persistent ear pain
- Chronic sore throat
- A dry or crusting ulcer on the lip
- And more
Like many cancers, the sooner it is caught, the greater the likelihood of successful treatment and recovery. We perform a minimally-invasive screening during your child’s preventive dental examination. We first examine the lips and surrounding tissue, then proceed to examine the back of the throat, roof of the mouth, cheeks, and floor of the mouth for any unusual lumps, tenderness, white or red patches, or other indication of concern. Keep in mind that while the chances of a child developing oral cancer are low, they are never zero, and staying on top of regular office visits helps ensure your child’s oral health is maintained.
